The Once and FutureChurch
Trinity has been at 520 South Main Street since 1805. The past is a chapter that ended beginning in 2016 when we conducted a nine month discernment process about the future. We could no longer afford our magnificence building and if we could not be good stewards of this community asset and beautiful work of art, we looked for someone(s) who could.
We hoped that somehow an adaptive reuse could restore the building and give it a future. Since the mission of the church, any church, is not the preservation and management of a building we knew that we could not simply fill it with cash-paying events and rental relationships. One, that wouldn’t raise enough income to support an expensive building with significant deferred maintenance, but two, being a landlord and business owner is not our mission
As God and serendipity would have it, we me and formed a relationship with a developer from Toronto who had a vision of a boutique inn, small restaurant, and event center. For the past year we have been working through the legal system to make way for that project. What we did not expect when we started, was that we would be able to continue worshipping at 520 South Main Street. But that is the plan. On Sunday morning and special holidays, we will worship in the sanctuary once it is restored. It is our once and future building!
Construction will begin in the summer of 2018 and we will be out of the sanctuary for at least a year. We have already moved our offices and program space, and we are thrilled to be downtown in an exciting and magical place – Trinity Place.
TRINITY PLACE, now and in the future!
Located at the confluence of Linden and Castle Streets, right across from the Post Office, Trinity Place is “an open space for growth, wellness, healing, and the arts.” The community uses it for a variety of programs, and we hold concerts, worship, and our after school tutoring program there. We have been blessed and wish to share that blessing, building a community of friendship and spiritual nurture through Trinity Place. Join us!
